I think this the first 2 hour rule ever to grace the front page of Oppo
Here's a photo that I took

Almost. It was just one hour though I suppose.

Did I calculate eastern time wrong?
![]() 09/22/2014 at 05:17 |

Actually, I think it's only one hour. The last post was made at 4AM EST and according to your post's timestamp, you posted at 5:05PM EST. Oh well!

I read 3 am Mountain time on my clock here in denver, which is 2 hours behind the east coast. Was I wrong when I assumed its 5am in NY?

Very nice. I do love a classic.

Thanks, I wouldnt have taken the photo if TheLoudMusic didnt ask me to, I was with him that day. The rover was in the parking lot of a car show. SOMEONE DROVE THAT SOMEWHERE JUST TO LEAVE IT AND SEE OTHER CLASSIC CARS!!

That's what's even cooler the owner uses it and parks her up like any other car while others drool over it. He's not abandoning or undervaluing her, he just know's she'll be going home with him today and woe betide anyone who thinks or tries otherwise.
After all, she's a manual and has three levers. Not many will attempt to drive her away.

I guess. Great picture nevertheless.

Only 3? Guess it didn't come with an overdrive. Yellow lever engages 4WD, red lever is for Hi/Low range selection.
I've done that at a couple of shows, parked the Series in the parking lot and came out to a group of people looking at it. Heh.

Series IIa I take it? I love them in green.

Pretty sure, yeah. You be the judge, here's more of it:
![]() 09/22/2014 at 05:57 |

Oh shit, that is a Series 1. Very nice, super jelly.
AND I just realized it has a PTO! Holy shit so much want.

PTO? I dont know much about early land rovers
![]() 09/22/2014 at 06:18 |

Hi. It's not mine and I didn't take the picture.
The series IIs and IIIs I've driven only had three levers. So was guessing, but they didn't either if I recall. Most of my effort was keeping the things in a straight line.

The winch in the front is powered by a drive shaft coming off a Power Take Off module on the transfer case so it's purely mechanical. The original goal of the Land Rover was to replace the tractor as a farm tool. PTO was so that it could power all the farm implements.

Thats really cool! This is information that I'm glad I know

A noble, but futile effort. The more "fancy" Land Rovers came with over drives so that you didn't have to do 55mph on the highway. You could do a whole 60mph!

Nothing is ever futile in driving one of these. They take effort and attention to driving them and you build an affinity for them.

Weren't they aftermarket addons though, not factory fitted?
![]() 09/22/2014 at 09:43 |

The PTO was a option you could order with your Land Rover.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 09:56 |

The overdrive I meant.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 09:59 |

Those were an option on the higher trims.

It's a I, but it looks like it has a II full floating rear axle. Wut?
![]() 09/22/2014 at 10:03 |

Most of these plates say Solihull, Warwickshire. Birmingham would be unique to some Series I models, I think.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 10:06 |

I think that's a Warn 8274 variant. Similar to what we put on my cousin's IIa.

Easier to source than a Series I axle?
![]() 09/22/2014 at 10:10 |
|
Possibly. Also less likely to see your rear wheel slowly crabbing sideways off the car on the end of the axle after the ball bearing fails. Yes, this is a thing that happens. Interesting note: some early IIs were actually put together with the non-floating axle setup as well.

Also speaking of sourcing parts:

These pages are actively trying to bankrupt me, so I thought I'd share the love. ;)

Did you notice the "Birmingham" on the plate in the picture, instead of Solihull? Kind of neat.

I did, threw me a little.
